Our 1984 Wedding Announcement
My sister Mary Alice gave me an East German brick of a camera In 1973 – a Hanimex Practica TL, $25 at the police auction. Thanks MA. It took the image of Jason’s flyer. The following year I started in photography at the University of Delaware.
Moved to San Francisco in 1980 intending an MFA from the Art Institute but the charm of the City won me over, I postponed for a year. Had an awesome year, no going back. Michael Kenna kindly recommended I take over from him; I became Ruth Bernhard’s printer. Children changed priorities; a printer didn’t make much considering a mortgage. The home that fit us best didn’t allow for a darkroom; unknowingly awaiting the digital revolution - suddenly everything was in color.
I’ve not much of an artist’s statement. While I may put thought into images I don’t take them to relay a deeper meaning other than I liked what I saw. I take them because it is fun, my play – no more, no less.
I’m thankful for all who allowed me to archive them - especially my wonderful wife LaDonna. Portraits and objects with personality I’ve enjoyed the most.
